One of the best known ski resorts in France, Meribel ski fans have been flocking to the site for very nearly three quarters of a century. Initially a small resort centered on Meribel village, it has grown to be an extensive resort stretching right across the entire middle valley of the Three Valleys area in the South Eastern French Alps.
One thing that strikes you with all of the Meribel ski resorts are, how impeccably designed all types of accommodation are. Of all purpose built resorts, this has retained its character more than any other. No more is this seen than through Meribel village itself, which makes for fantastic location for all; but perhaps families above all other groups.
There are individual chalets too, rather than the apartment blocks, and these tend to be drawn towards the Mussillon resort. Right on the main road, the village and all surrounding areas are easily accessible. The main road takes you everywhere throughout the region, including the snow covered airstrip and the very newest development Belvedere, which pulls the young crowd.
Continuing up the valley further, the sister resort of Meribel-Mottaret is wonderfully located right in the heart of the Three Valleys. Again, this is excellently located being just a mogul leap from Les Menuires, Val Thorens and Courchevel. Though it is not as charming as other resorts; the proximity to the best slopes in the region more than make up for this to the dedicated skier.
Further down from Meribel itself, lie two fantastic alternative destinations. Bride-les-Bains is a wonderful spa town, whilst Les Allures a small village are both fantastic to get away from the hubbub of the main site. Both in close proximity to the gondola too, travel is simple.
Accessibility to the slopes from any accommodation is well catered for, with shuttles to each slope, and public buses which are affordable. But, a car is always useful for travelling around the immediate area, and heading to other close by resorts.
A car also comes into its own if ventures further afield are on the agenda. Heading up to Vallon, to see the fantastic scenery in the area, and the wonders of the Mont du Vallon glacier, being a highlight. You may even feel the need to join the skiers that tackle this toughest of slopes in the area.
Meribel village is not over burdened with facilities, though there are excellent quality restaurants and a fitness center. Throughout the region though, the quality of restaurants is expectedly high, and the newer developments well appointed.
The best snow of the region tends to cling to the best slopes of Les Menuires, Val Thorens, and Mont du Vallon. These are of course helped with the routes being north facing, but much work continues throughout all routes through the season, to ensure quality powder wherever it is needed.
The group of Meribel ski resorts are a firm favorite, and look set to continue to be for many years to come. For experienced skiers this is the case, but it is probably for those venturing onto the slopes for the first time that the appeal really lies.
To find out the latest on the Meribel Ski resort, you want to find there website online. You will find that a lot of tourism sites clarify the events and hottest spots to go visit. You can also get catered ski chalets during certain times of the year.
