I’ve used Expedia and Orbitz mostly. Best to compare between them when booking. Also, if flying, it’s usually much cheaper if you book a flight in advance rather than wait until the last minute to book a flight I’ve found. Also of course certain months of the year are more expensive. Usually June and July is the height of the "tourist season" and there fore more expensive to travel. At least in my experience.

I´m in the tour business in the D.R. for many years and I would say PUERTO PLATA and this for the ¨wants¨ you have and to have the opportunity to have a place where you can learn this gorgeous country. Punta Cana is only a Hotel strip with nothing outside….

Look at funjet.com hot deals section. You should be able to easily make it at that price. Ok, here’s a thought. But I have to clarify. The Blue Bay Getaway in Cozumel has a dive center on site, but I would recommedn coordinating with Dive Paradise on the island instead of using the one there. Divemaster Peanut was a lot of fun. The resort is terrible, the beach is fantastic, the service is poor, but it’s all-inclusive and you can have all the drinks and lousy food you want. Just don’t let them force you to tour their timeshares. If you don’t intend to be at the resort all day, it’s do-able, but just lower your expectations. Honestly, it was the worst resort I’ve ever stayed at, but you can get there for about 4 days including airfare for about $300 per person. Their male massage therapist was miles above any other I have ever had in my life! There’s excellent and terrible. There might be some others in Cozumel that would be better. I personally like the Mayan Riviera region better, but the diving in Cozumel can’t be beat! If you end up near Tulum, make sure you dive the cenotes. It’s certainly an experience you must do once. If you’re cold natured, wear a 3 with a shortie or a 7. The water is 75 year round. And go to Xel-Ha!!!!!! The excellent news is that you are traveling the right time of year. All the rates drop in August because kids are going back to school and it’s so blooming hot!

Puerto Plata, Domincan Repubic…on the island of Hispanola.
Puerto Plata because it is surrounded by mountains on the east and south sides (protection from terrible weather). We stayed at the Paradise Beach Club Resort and the all inclusive was very reasonable. The staff their is friendly, the food was fantastic, and the beach was right out our patio door. Take my advise, if you go, take a taxi to the waterfalls. You get to climb up 7 falls (with guids) and then ride the water back down. It was the best thing ever.
